My Law Firm

Profile:

I carried out my training contract at Clyde & Co and subsequently qualified there in the Speciality, International Risk and Reinsurance team. As a newly qualified, I then moved to DWF Law LLP and joined the London Market Insurance and Reinsurance team.

From a young age, I knew that I wanted to be a solicitor as I wanted to provide my family with (much needed) stability and financial security. I am the first generation in my family to attend university, and become a lawyer. I, luckily, secured a training contract in my second year of university. However, given that monetary support from my firm was not means tested, I had to carry out the LPC part time without my peers, whilst working 35+ hours in a restaurant.

Coming from this background made me feel like I was constantly swimming against the current. I did not have any exposure to professionals working in the City’s legal and professional services firms like many of my counterparts, so I always felt a step behind everyone else. At times, it felt like everyone spoke a different language. That is until I learned that my greatest strength was my background, as it has provided me with a number of invaluable skills which I otherwise would not have had. Those being: advanced communication skills from years working in customer service, an excellent work ethic, dedication, perseverance and many more.

I feel very passionate that firms should strive to improve their diversity, not only because ethically it is the right thing to do, but also because it opens up a whole new world of talent which has not yet been fully tapped into.
