Training Contract

Dechert recruits ten trainees a year, meaning you will have plenty of responsibility early on. Trainees complete six seats, each lasting four months, and there will also be the option to repeat seats. This allows you to learn about a great number of different practice areas and be confident about where you want to specialise. Trainees have the chance to complete a variety of different seats, such as finance, corporate and real estate.

Trainees are greatly supported throughout their contract, working in small teams in every seat. There is always a supervisor on hand to provide guidance, and you will be supported by a personal partner who will mentor you. The graduate recruitment team will also be available to help you realise and reach your career goals. Trainees also get the chance to learn about a variety of different non-legal skills, with the firm’s Critical Skills Institute teaching trainees about effective communication and leadership.

If you are interested in working abroad, there is the option to complete a client secondment in Toulouse. The firm also offers international secondments at their offices in Dublin and Dubai.

Vacation Scheme

Vacation schemes at Dechert are essential if you wish to apply for a training contract, as the firm recruits from these schemes. It’s also the chance to learn about what life is like in a multinational law firm.

Dechert offers Winter, Spring and Summer schemes, each lasting two weeks. You will experience two seats during your time there, and the firm will ask for your preferences beforehand. Throughout the scheme, you will complete real work: research, drafting contracts, attending meetings, all the kinds of things you would be doing as a trainee. This allows you to develop your legal skills and learn more about the firm.

There will also be plenty of opportunities for you to network, as you will be supported by a supervisor, a trainee buddy and a partner buddy. You will be able to have a variety of informal conversations with these professionals, so you can learn a bit about the culture of the firm. Dechert also puts on a variety of social events for students doing their training contract. Past students have attended dinner at the Ivy, drinks at the Shard and have had a private pod on the London Eye.
