Profile:
I became interested in a career in commercial law through an internship during Secondary School with the Social Mobility Foundation, an organisation which provides opportunities for high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds. Having been raised in a single parent family, in which nobody had previously attended university, with access to free school meals, this opened my eyes to a career path which went beyond the apparent social confines of my surroundings.
I studied at the University of Glasgow, including a year spent at the University of Copenhagen, achieving First Class Honours in Scots Law. During my studies, I was accepted onto Aspiring Solicitors’ Aspire Programme, gaining further invaluable insight into commercial law and the application process. Through Aspire, I attained a place on the Freshfields START Scheme, the first step towards an eventual Training Contract offer. I have recently completed the English Law Conversion and am now enrolled on the City Consortium Programme at BPP University.
Commercial law influences almost every aspect of society, requiring an innovative, collaborative approach to an expanse of novel and consistently evolving issues. Promoting diversity and increasing the participation of under-represented backgrounds is a crucial way in which the legal sector can maximise its ability to achieve this. In drawing upon a wider range of experience, opinions, and cultural backgrounds, nuanced, inclusive, and high-quality solutions become increasingly likely.
However, the application and interview process remain daunting, particularly when they are faced without guidance. In counteracting this, the mentoring and opportunities offered by Aspiring Solicitors can have an immeasurable influence, ensuring that those from under-represented backgrounds are placed on a level-playing field. Having personally felt these benefits, I hope that my own experience can assist future applicants in achieving similar success.
