Profile:

I am a Pakistani Muslim. I trained and qualified at Davenport Lyons, then went on to work at RPC, Pinsent Masons and Edwin Coe before moving to Naylor Solicitors LLP in February 2024 where I am a Senior Associate.

Through school, I undertook a 2 week work experience placement at a criminal law firm when I was 15. The managing partner, who was Indian and female, offered me a job and I ended up working there during the holidays for 8 years until I finished my LPC. The experience I gained was really invaluable and included fielding queries from clients, dealing with barristers and attending court to take attendance notes.

Having completed my law degree at Kings College, London and LPC at BPP, I started my training contract. I initially felt very out of my depth, being the youngest trainee as I had not taken a gap year and had gone “straight through” from A-levels to training contract. I felt “different” because I was state school educated, the only South Asian female and did not drink alcohol. I also came from a very modest background compared to many of my colleagues, who spoke of their love of skiing, sailing and their holiday homes over drinks.

Over my career I have worked hard and also made an effort to attending social and marketing events to improve my confidence. I am very proud to see how far I have come.  I see many training contract candidates who have great academics but struggle with conversing in interviews and so do not progress. Diversity in the people you work with leads to diversity in thought and skillsets and it is therefore very important to me to be able to help other aspiring lawyers who may feel “different” because of their background enter and progress in their legal careers.
