Profile:
I have just completed my degree in Law with French Law at the University of Birmingham. My training contract with Jones Day will start in 2020.
My journey has been rather unconventional. I came to the UK in July 2011, from Congo. I was 17, I could not speak English at all, and I had had very little education before. My parents had left Congo due to political unrest. I stayed behind, looking after my three younger siblings. My family constantly relocated in different parts of Africa (Congo Brazzaville, Benin, South Africa, Congo DRC). The constant moving and having to look after my siblings meant I couldn’t stay in school.
When I came to the UK, I enrolled on an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course where I learnt quite quickly and was recommended for A Levels. I started A Levels in September 2012, studying 4 AS subjects alongside GCSE English, in first year and then GCSE Maths in second year. I completed my A Levels in 2014 and was admitted to study for the LLB Law with French Law at the University of Birmingham which I have now completed.
The process from ESOL to a degree has been both challenging and interesting. I was the first in my family to go to university in the UK. At college and at university, I have made use of all the opportunities out there. Often, this involved getting very far away from my comfort zone. I also balanced final year of university with the care of my two sisters. Having a unique background has meant navigating through systems and finding the right help. I believe the experience gained along the way can be of use to others.
