Profile:
I am currently in my first seat at Charles Russell Speechlys (London), in the Commercial Dispute Resolution team.
My path into Law was slightly unusual as I studied Psychology at university. It was only in my final year of university that I decided to pursue a career in Law. I had not completed much work experience in the industry (aside from one week at Mishcon de Reya when I was 15). I was definitely concerned that, due to my non-Law background and lack of experience, firms would not take me seriously. However, I was delighted that Charles Russell Speechlys offered me a Vacation Scheme place and as a result of that, a Training Contract offer. It was clear from the sorts of questions asked on their application form and in interviews that the firm was much more interested in my personality, values and attitudes than my academic choices and experience. It is reassuring to see more and more firms taking this approach in their recruitment process.
Growing up, I had not seen much ethnic representation in the legal sector, so I was hesitant about how I might fit into the culture at the firm. However, what I have found is that Charles Russell Speechlys (and other firms) are very much engaged in promoting diversity, both in recruitment and firm wide initiatives. It is really encouraging to see the legal sector evolve with the times in order to better reflect the modern, inter-related world that we live in.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you are thinking about a career in Law and find you can relate to some of the fears and doubts I had when I was applying.
