The AllAboutLaw Perspective on Jones Day

A career at Jones Day in London gives you the opportunity to work on complex, multijurisdictional disputes and transactions. The firm is most famous for its non-rotational training system. Unlike most law firms, which require you to complete four six-month seats, trainees spend their time working across departments on a variety of different matters. This gives you the flexibility to discover your interests, provides you with the chance to see deals and cases from start to finish, and prevents you from completing six months of training in a practice you're not interested in.

Your training contract will involve plenty of opportunities for you to develop your legal skills. You’ll receive on-the-job training, and you will be expected to actively seek out feedback from the lawyers you work with. You'll also attend regular seminars delivered by senior lawyers, which will help you develop your technical skillset.

Trainees also complete the LLM Legal Practice (encompassing SQE1&2) with the University of Law, with complementary training on resilience and presentation skills. There's even a week-long trip to Washington DC as part of your induction. You’ll meet new lawyers from offices around the world and understand the “One Firm Worldwide” ethos.

At Jones Day, you’re sure to feel welcomed, with past trainees praising the collegiate atmosphere. Each trainee has a dedicated partner and trainee mentor, who are on hand to provide support from day one. Partners and associates keep their doors open and place a high value on trainees' contributions. Jones Day’s numerous diversity initiatives make the firm inclusive and supportive, with numerous affinity groups supporting marginalised communities.

When not working on high-value international cases and transactions, trainees can find themselves getting involved in pro bono work. The firm has a long tradition of providing pro bono work to promote the rule of law, support academic, medical, and cultural institutions, improve the lives of low-income individuals, and support disaster victims.
