The housing management division at Capsticks represents many of the largest local authorities and social housing providers in the country. The work encompasses both contentious and non contentious work, but Capsticks has a national reputation for its litigation team which is one of, if not the largest in the country. Dealing with possession claims, disrepair litigation, injunction applications, leasehold management, Ombudsman complaints, and providing wider housing management training and advice, the work is varied and fast paced and paralegals have the opportunity to gain broad experience working directly under supervision of our specialist senior lawyers . The team is spread between offices in Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Wimbledon and Winchester.
The Division
We provide housing management advice to over 200 social housing providers across the country, offering our clients specialist legal advice from people who understand the issues.
Our pragmatic approach blends operational, strategic and legal expertise. We guide our clients through the legal maze, so they can avoid expensive mistakes and withstand potential legal challenges. Our unique services include an in-house counsel and 24/7 advice line. Working in partnership with clients, we offer topical updates and bespoke training to ensure your people gain in knowledge and confidence.
The Role and Responsibilities
The main role and responsibilities will include helping a partner and solicitors in aspects of their casework including (although, this is not an exhaustive list):-
- Assisting fee earners;
- Working to a chargeable hours target;
- Running a caseload of access injunctions
- Drafting general correspondence and documents;
- Undertaking research;
- Liaison with clients and analysing evidence received in order to advise the client;
- Liaison with third parties, including Counsel, defendants and their representatives and the Courts;
- Preparing pleadings;
- Liaison with witnesses and drafting witness statements;
- Preparing disclosure
- Administrative tasks such as invoicing
Supervision, support and relevant training will be provided although the successful applicant will also be encouraged, where appropriate, to use their own initiative.
Skills and Experience
Candidates should have:
- A 2:1 undergraduate degree;
- Direct experience and / or an interest in housing management and the social housing sector would be advantageous
- Ideally an LPC or SQE qualification
- Strong IT skills;
- Ability to adhere to and manage deadlines;
- Strong written skills;
- Good administration skills;
Candidates will also be expected to demonstrate at interview that they:
- Are able to work well as part of a team;
- Can follow procedures and direction with precision
- Are well organised;
- Have good attention to detail;
- Are able to work well under pressure;
- Are proactive; and
- Are self-motivated
Candidates should be aware:
